MAGELLAN
Ferdinand Magellan was born to a noble Portuguese family in 1480. His parents died when he was 10 years old. At age 12, he became a page for Queen Leonor. He was in a good school with a very high education level. He learned about the travels of Vasco da Gama and Christopher Columbus.
His crew moved on to the Spice Islands and later made it back by sailing around South Africa with only 10 men left. Even though he didn't live to the end of the trip, Magellan is still considered the leader of the first circumnavigation around the world.
In 1519 he set off for his voyage. On January 10, 1520 they founf a new bay and thought they were really close to their desitiation. It turns our it wasn't the news he wanted to hear. As they set out again he came across another bay in whivh he discovered various spices that he brought back to Spain and got credit for. While sailing, they came upon an ocean that they named the Pacific Ocean that led him to the conclusion that the Earth was in fact a sphere-shape and all of the oceans are connected.
Magellan first sailed in 1505, serving for Portugal. He went to India with the crew of Franciscode Almeida. A few years later he decided to go on the biggest voyage of his life. His goal was to find an eastern route to the Spice Islands. Franciscode Almeida wrote letters to him telling him of the different routes to the Spice Islands.
Magellan died in what is now the Phillipeans. He was killed during battle with the natives of Mactan Island. A poisned arrow wen through he foot and a spear through his heart. His shipmates burned one of the ships in honor of his death
