Silver Lining
That thoroughbred had been here on the ranch for 3-odd years. He’d tried every seasoned hand and brought a few to tears. Tom had bought some ranch bred colts, of ten that he brought home, The other 9 had done been sold, and one was left alone. Thor, as we called him, he had cut his rear right hind. The others got an early start, but Thor, he fell behind. But a nicer colt you couldn’t find, to work with on the ground. Man, he was a worker, Thor was big-sale bound. He’d stand to hobble and saddle, and shod just like a dream. Never mean or stubborn, of the crop he was the cream. The first few times I rode him, he never tried to buck. We thought he’d be the money-maker, but we didn’t have such luck. Cause one day I was riding in the round pen at Tom’s place, I nudged him to a lope, just to see a change of pace. I had him working steady, changing leads up on the fly, When all at once, Thor bogged his head, and blew up to the sky! A bronc had never bucked as hard as Thor that afternoon. I coulda shook me out a loop and laid ‘er ‘round the moon. A few-odd seconds later, I slipped and blew my swells. As if I was on a demon bronc from Satan’s string in hell. The next few weeks I rode him, he started out alright, But no matter what we tried to do, he always took to flight. We decided to snub him up one day, me and Tom were battle worn, Tom was on his dead-broke horse, and had wrapped the saddle horn. But Thor, he bucked so hard and high, we knew we’d never win. He jumped so high I accidently kicked Tom in the chin! Weeks went by, and then some more, we never got him right. It didn’t matter what we did he always tried to fight. I knew we’d never fix him back to when we had him made. Snubbed up tight one day, I asked Tom for his blade. Tom asked “Why you need it, you gonna cut the rope?” I said “No, just hand it over, I’m gonna cut his throat.” Amazing how a once good colt can go from good to bad. From angel to an outlaw, it really makes me sad. But they say there’s a silver lining behind that old black cloud. We found a new outlet to make me and Thor real proud. We loaded him in the trailer and we’re headed to the show, Cause he’s in the draw tomorrow at the National Finals Rodeo!
