There have only ever been 2 supreme court justices that held the 1st amendment rights to be absolute. Generally the court has held that they may be limited so as to protect the rights of others. or to guard against subversion of the government.. Fowler v. Rhode Island (1953)- held that penalizing a minister of Jehovah's Witnesses for preaching at a peaceful religious meeting in a public park, when other religious groups were aloud to do so, is unconstitutional. Epperson v. Arkansas (1968)- held that an anti-evolution statue, preventing the teaching of the theory of evolution in the state of Arkansas' public schools and universities, is unconsitutional.

Explanation:
The First Amendment establishes many of our individual rights as Americans. Specifically our freedom of and from religion plays a part in our everyday lives. This freedom contributes to open-mindedness as well as togetherness. It also helps to prevent government tyranny. Without this basic freedom in place, life would be very different for us. We could be persecuted by the government simply for not believing in the same God as they do. Thankfully our founders made sure that we would never have to worry about something like that happening.
