Dengue Fever
Vaccine?????? In Nov 2007 Tetravalent vaccine was tested in the US by Sanofi. Currently waiting for approval. This is feat seeing that dengue has four different viruses!
FUN FACT! Dengue fever is also known as Breakbone or Dandy Fever.
Course of Disease * Body is infected by a mosquito *3-18 days later: Chills begin, headaches, backaches, eye pain, severe prostration and joint pain, up to 104 F fever, heartbeat will slow and blood pressure will go down, facial rash and red eyes may appear. Lymph nodes and spleen may be enlarged. This period last 2 to 3 days. *24 hour afebrile or grace period! :) *Afterwards fever returns but not as extreme, maculopapular rash appears coming from extremities covering body except for face. *Recovery may take a few weeks.
Glossary Prostration: Too tired to do anything Maculopapular: red elevated spot on the skin Hemorrhage: Abnormal internal or external discharge of blood.
Dengue Fever can develop into Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) and then can develop further into the deadly Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever Shock Syndrome!
