The Epic of Gilgamesh
The Epic of Gilgamesh is a legend from Mesopotamia (2700 B.C)
The Epic of Gilgamesh is about the fear of death and the search for immortality. When Gilgamesh's friend dies, his body decayed and Gilgamesh was so revolted by it that he seeked the secret of immortality.
Gilgamesh wanted a body without organs, a body that did not rot or stink. . . . . . . . . . After a long journey, Gilgamesh met Utnapishtim. Utnapishtim was a man who was granted immortality by the gods. Utnapishtim rescued living things by making them go onto an ark, so they survived the flood. The gods blessed him for this.
Untapishtim was a model. Immortality was an appropriate reward for a model.
Noah (in the bible) did do the samething, but did not earn immortality for what he did.
This legend is connected to the AOI Human Ingenuity. By reading this story people know more about the ancient civilization Mesopotamia. The Mesopotamians seemed to believe that immortality did exist and that if you wanted to live for ever then you would have to do something out of the ordinary. They created this ledgend because (to me) it seems like a moral,; if you do something very good then you will get something in exchange, like Karma. You can also compare and contrast Mesopotamia to another civilization
Utnapishtim didn't want to tell Gilgamesh the secret though, but Utnapistim's wife convinces him to tell. Utnapistim tells Gilgamesh that there is a special plant and whoeves possesses it will become young agian forever. Gilgamesh go out and finda the plant and begins his journey home. Whle on his way back, he befriends a snake who goes along with him on his jouney. One night when Gilgamesh is sleeping the snake sheds his skin and takes the flower; he becomes young again. Gilgamesh returns to Uruk with no flower, but modist. Gilgamesh contimues to be a good ruler
