Dante Alighieri was born in Florence in 1265, from a poor family of the guelfo party.. In 1285 he married Gemma di Manetto Donati,. He had three or four children with her we are not sure excatly. In the next couple years, he became a priore (a sort of governor) in 1300. Dante had to make some hard political decisions, he had to oppose pope Bonifacio VIII’s expansion policy, taking a stand against the pontiff’s temporal interference. He spent the rest of his life roaming around Italy until he died in Ravenna in 1321.
Dante Alighieri wrote the Divine Comedy. This is signifigant to history because it gave a very elaborate discription of hell, purgatory and heaven. This is signifagant because the church had a lot of power at this stage in history. This struck fear in people and made them flee to the church. He also wrote many other important works.
