Green Man is a very common gargoyle placed on cathedrals and churches all over. The Green Man is on 2nd century roman columns and Hindu temples in India. He is found in England, Wales, and Scotland and on great banks and financial houses on Wall Street. It’s believed he came from hunters who painted caves in Lascaux and Altamira. He is popular in Robin Hood and the Morris Dances of Old England. The Green Man may be recognized in early English epic poems in Gawain and the Green Knight. Because of that, “death and renewal” are the Green that represents life.
A temple in Hyderabad is a Hindu Temple in India where they use gargoyles in the form of gods.
Gargoyles
La Gargouille, a dragon who had fire breath and spouting water and caused much damage. Every year the people of Rouen would offer a victim to the Gargouille, usually a criminal, even though it was believed he preferred maidens. In about 600, St. Romanis agreed to save the town if the villagers built a church and got baptized. Romanis restrained the dragon and brought him to town on a leash made from the priest’s robe. They put la gargouille on a stake and it is said the head & neck wouldn’t burn. The remains were mounted in town and became the model for gargoyles.
“Gargoyle” and “Gargle” have a common root coming from “Gargouille” which is a French word meaning throat. “Gargoyle” comes from Latin word “gurgulio” meaning throat and the gurgling sound. “Grotesque” is a more common gargoyle now, which isn’t a water spout.
In North America, gargoyles are used to protect old buildings in cities like NY, Chicago, and Philly. As well as universities such as Princeton and Duke.
Athena was mad about Medusa’s looks so she turned her into such an ugly girl that whenever someone looked at her, they turned to stone.
Gargoyles can be traced back 4000 years to Egypt, Rome, Greece & were also found at the ruins of Pompeii.
Gargoyles helped spread scriptures and emphasize biblical stories.
The TV show Gargoyles was produced in 1994 by Disney.
