Mythological Evolution
The Sirens of Homer's Odyssey stand for things that men want but can never have, which is along the same lines as attractive celebretities, like Angelina Jolie.
Modern day comics, such as Marvel's Captain America, portray larger-than-life characters who maybe-could-have-not-really exsisted at some time, like the ancient Sumerian hero Gilgamesh, featured in the epic poem of the same name.
In the old Scandanavian saga, Beowulf, the protaginist is shown as a savior, one who dies for the good of his people, a Christ Child, if you will. Another who suffered, and died for the good of his people was MLK Jr. He never backed down, never gave up, and ultimately died for the cause he believed in.

The MLK/Beowulf comparison is not working for me unless you can identify MLK's "grendel"
