Vampires- those horrors of our imaginations, the shadows that haunt our dreams. The demons of the battle fields, the malicoius victims of a violent death. But also the shooting star in the sky, and the warriors of righteousness. Across time and space, vampires have played many vital roles in our myths and legends.
Vampires of the World
Living Vampires These vampires are those considered as a seperate, but none the less mortal, species, and those humans who, through magic or otherwise, aquire a taste for human blood.
Danag (Filipino)- These vampires worked in harmony with humans for a long time, until, one day, a woman cut her finger, and a Danag licked it, enjoying the taste so much that it drained her of blood.
Brahmaparush (Indian)- Enjoys eating humans. They drain the blood through the skull and devour the brains, then wrap the victims in their own intestines and do a ritual dance around the corpse.
Ghual (Arabian)- Humans who, through the use of black magic, sorcery, or demons, become vampiric. They retain human features when young, but eventually develop shriveled skin, claws, and fangs.
Undead Vampires Most vampire fall under this category. Any vampire consisting of the soul and/or spirit of a deceased human is considered part of the ''undead'' family of vampires.
Owenga (African)- These vampires have books for feet, and become a vampire by sucking on the thumb of a sleeping person. Supposedly the reincarnation of an evil sorceror.
Nachzeher (Northern European)- A psychic vampire. Once buried, it will eat its shroud, then its own flesh, slowly killing any living relatives.
Ch'ing Shih (Chinese)- Created by a cat jumping over a corpse. Can appear as a ball of light or a reanimated corpse. Has poisonous breathe, but can be killed with weapons or sunlight. Must count all grains of rice it sees.
Kukuthi (Albanian)- A relatively harmless vampire, the Kukuthi takes only a small amount of blood from its sleeping victims. This vampire must return to it's grave at night until its 30 years dead. It can only be killed by a wolf.
Spirit Vampires These vampires are neither undead, nor mortal. Many of them are worshipped as gods, or are deities used to explain ''supernatural'' events.
Penanggalan (Malaysian)- They fly through the sky at night, with only fully formed head and shoulders, and trailing entrails. They feed on children and women in labor.
Siberian Vampire (Russian)- They are the celestial vampires. They live up in the sky, disguised as stars. On crisp nights, they fall from the sky to feed on the blood of sleeping travelers. Mortally afraid of wakeful humans, if anyone is watching the sky, they fall harmlessly past, as a stream of light.
