McBrayer's Class News 11.10.08-11.14.08
Dear Parents, There are a few important things coming up this week. We have a field trip to Golden Flake Chip Factory on Thursday, November 13th. Please be sure to send your children to school in close-toed shoes. Permission slips are due Monday, November 10th and cost is $4.00. Progress reports will be sent home in Wednesday folders. Please sign and return as soon as possible. If there are any questions or you would like to schedule a conference, it is never too late. I wanted to remind you of a few things regarding homework. 100 minutes of reading are due every Tuesday. Please encourage your child to record the book titles and just have you sign. Before too long, I will send home a math assignment a week. This will help to create personal responsibilty for him/her. Please send in a piece of postarboard. We are going to be selecting work to add to our portfolio. This work can be anything we are proud of and shows ourselves as learners. Please send this in by November 21st. Thank you for all you do! Sincerely, Mrs. McBrayer
Curriculum Update:
Reading We are reading Charlotte's Web by E. B.. White. This is a wonderfu story of friendship all children are sure to love! We are doing several activitie daily as we read each chapter. A few of the activities include: sequencing chapter events on a timeline, ''lifting a line from the text'' and identifying character traits, creating mental images, and class discussions. Writing Students have really taken off with publishing!! They have spent a lot of time writing about personal experiences or combining actual events with a fictional twist. Please know that as your child brings home his/her published piece that we have spent a great deal of time editing and conferencing until our piece is perfect for publishing the final draft. Word Study Making and building words with long /a/. Our poem was “Autumn Leaves are Falling”. Students are to create an interpretive dance to act out the poem, partner read, and re-read their poetry books. Mathematics We are working on growing patterns and finding patterns on the 100s chart become comfortable with moving on the 100s chart. The 100s chart helps us to understand place value and the number system as we begin adding larger sums. Social Science Students worked together to create a class mural/collage to show their knowledge of the different layers of the rainforest and the animals that inhabit each layer. Students will also begin working in small groups to act as research detectives learning about a habitat. Students will choose a way to present their information to the rest of the class.
