Definition- a mathmatical theorem that states the square of the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares of the legs. So the two "legs" of the right triangle squared and added together will equal the hypotenuse squared the "a" and "b" represent the legs and the "c" is the hypotenuse Example: a + b =c 10 + 12 =c 100+144=c 244=c (square root of 244-round to the nearest tenth) 15.6

1. Lindsay is creating a sailboat. One of her sails is a right triangle. If the legs are 10 and 5 feet long what is the hypotenuse? Solution: Well first you would square 10 and 5 ft to be 100 and 25 ft. Add these to numbers together and find the square root of 125 ft and it will equal the hypotenuse. 2. Lexi is swimming across the square pool (all sides are equal 10 feet each side). If she is swimming on the diagnol what is the length she is swimming? Solution: First you square the 10 feet on each of the two legs equalling 100 ft each. Add these together to equal 200 and then find the square root of 200-the answer will be the hypotenuse (distance swimming across the pool). 3. Sarah stands at 60 inches tall and her shadow is 75 inches. How long is it from the top of her head to the top of her shadow.

Pythagoras was a greek philosopher who did developments in mathmatics, atronomy(although some question this) and the theory of music. He lived on the island of Samos(he traveled to eygpt and many other places). He spoke of square and cubic numbers. He thought of a way to find squared sides of a right triangle using a formula. But there is controversey that the Babylonians were first to find this theorem. His time period is unsure because of his existance was so long ago (569-475 B.C.E.)
