Point of view: It was pretty cold here in Fairbaks today. I hitchhiked with a guy named Jim Gallien. I told him my name was Alex, and I was from South Dakota. He told me the hunting wasn't easy where I was going, and he gave me a pair of rubber boots. Jim also gave me a sandwich and some chips.
Personal response: I do not understand why Alex's backpack would be so light. He was planning to spend several months in the wild. The only food he had in his pack was a ten-pound bag of rice and he had minimal gear. He should have had water proof boots and a better rifle, ax, and a compass. He seemed to be doomed from the very beginning.
