Journal entry: I worked for four weeks in Carthage, South Dakota. I went over to eat dinner at Wayne Westerberg's house before I left and met Gail. I left for Alaska ten days ago and I am finally in Fairbanks! It was difficult catching rides in the Yukon Territory, but it was worth it! I'm alive!

Personal response: I admire the fact that Chris worked so hard in Carthage. Westerberg offered to buy Chris a ticket to Fairbanks, but he refused. He insisted on getting there on his own. He was an extremely stubborn person, and did not seem to fear anything. He is about to take an enormous chance living in the wild.
