Journal Entry This is a disaster: I decided that it was time to bring this adventure to a close and get back to the world of man and women. After shaving and patching my jeans, I hiked to the Teklannika River. It was too deep and the current was too powerful. I have no choice but to return to the bus. If I tried to cross, it would have been suicidal.
Personal response: Jon Krakauer wrote this book because he had something in common with Chris McCandless. He was adventurous and took risks. He said that the fact that he survived his Alaska adventure and Chris did not, was a matter of chance. I also think that if Chris had been able to cross the river on July 3rd, he might have survived. If he had gone up stream, he might have found a spot easier to cross.
Quotes Quotes "I possessed neither his intellect nor his lofty ideals. But we were similarly affected by the skewed relationships we had with our fathers." (Jon Krakauer) page 155 "I am reborn. This is my dawn. Real life has just begun." (Chris McCandless) page 168
