Profile: Catherine the Great was a determined, successful woman. She was one of the most powerful women in the 18th century. Catherine was born to Prince Christian Augustus of Anhalt-Zerbst and Princess Johanna of Holstein-Gottorp on April 21, 1729 in Stettin, Germany. After fighting her way to the throne, Catherine eventually rid of her undesirable husband, Peter III. Once she had the crown she was able to westernize and modernize the Russian Empire. She enhanced the agriculture and promoted settlement in the lower populated areas. The improvement in agriculture bettered the poor economy. The increase in industry was great under her reign. Catherine, always ready to learn, was a huge supporter of education. She assisted in the building of multiple museums, schools (both primary and secondary), and universities. Catherine died from a stroke in 1796. Even today Catherine the Great is considered one of the most excellent rulers Russia has ever had.

Top Ten: 1.) Catherine was born as Sophia Augusta Frederika of Anhalt-Zerbst on April 21, 1729 in Stettin, Germany. 2.) Her reign lasted 34 years. 3.) Catherine was married to the Grand Duke Peter Fedorovich, Peter the Great's grandson. 4.) Catherine came from a devoted Lutheran family, but in order to marry into Peter's family she had to convert to Russian Orthodoxy. 5.) Catherine dislike her foolish husband so much that she was involved in planning a coup against him. The plan worked and Catherine took on being Empress and Sole-Autocrat. 6.) She increased the numbers of industries from 984 to 3161. 7.) She made reforms including, making district and provincial towns have at least one school and it was essential that a city with a population over 20,000 have a hospital with a doctor, surgeon, assistant surgeon, and a student doctor. 8.) Catherine decided to set an example for the citizens and get vaccinated for small pox, which was a very prominent disease at the time. 9.) Catherine increased the imperial library to 38,000 volumes, showing her love for reading. 10.) Her son, Paul, succeeded her after her death.
