Whats happening to the poor innocent coins?
The coins are simply being coated in zinc. The zinc bonds to the copper with a little help from the hydrogen in the solution
The coating of zinc is what causes the dubloons to become a shiny (or not so shiny) silver color.
When the now silver coin is heated, the zinc layer is diffused into the copper layer which results in the gold colored brass.
Back
Bad guys in the olden days used this process to sell cheap jewelery (copper rings and necklaces) for very high prices. Some people still use this trick to make there own jewelery. There may even be people who use this scam still. You never know.
