Benjamin Franklin 1706-1790 WHAT DID BENJAMIN FRANKLIN DO? Benjamin Franklin was a printer, creator of the first circulating library, the first president of the University of Pennsylivania, inventor, scientist, philosopher, musician, economist, and the first U.S. Postmaker General. In politics he was a leading revolutionary, signer of the Decloration Of Independence, head of an antislavery organization, delegate to the Constitutional Convention, and a diplomat. WHY IS BENJAMIN FRANKLIN IMPORTANT? Benjamin invented many useful objects, from bifocal glasses to the lightning rod. He was one of the oldest founding fathers and he inspired young revolutionaries such as Thomas Jefferson. Franklin believed people should volunteer and be in public service. 1729 Franklin becomes owner and publisherof the Pennsylvania Gazette 1775 Franklin submits the Articles of Confederation. 1779 He appointed minister to France 1782 Helps nagotiate the Treaty of Paris with Britain
BOSTON MASSACRE The tension began on March 5, 1770 when a British soldier patrolling the city got into an argument with a colonist. The colonist struck the soldier with snowballs and rocks. A few moments later the soldier was surrounded by more angered colonists. When another soldier rushed to the patrolling soldiers side the colonists did nothing but get even louder and even angrier. The large crowd surrounding the soldier began chanting "I dare you to shoot." Not much longer after that, the British soldiers opened fire and killed 3 men instantly. 2 other colonists died a few days later.
