Zebra mussels spread rapidly through the Great Lakes and the rivers of Eastern Mississippi sometimes including Tennessee, Ohio, Arkansas, and Illinois rivers. Rarely they can be found in the Hudson River.
Mussels attach to boats, nets, docks, swim platforms, boat lifts, and can be moved on any of these objects. They also arrive in their location from ballast water dumping from Europe.
Zebra Mussels can cause problems for residents on shore and recreationists. People living on shore could take water from the lake or rivers to use in gardening, or watering their lawns with sprinklers. The zebra mussels could cause the water sprinkler to become clogged.
Over the past decade, zebra mussels have continued and continued to invade The Great Lakes, as part of the U.S. Zebra mussels are native to western Russia, near the Caspian Sea. Zebra mussels are anchoring themselves by alot to native mussels making it impossible for the native mussel to function. 10,000 zebra mussels at once have attached to a one native mussel. Native mussels have dissappeard in Lake St. Clair and western basin of Lake Erie.
The spread of the zebra mussel can be prevented by having good boat hygiene and do not transfer water from a body of water to another.
