The Snow Leopard
The Snow Leopard is very rare. There are an estimated 3,500 - 7,000 left in the wild while there are at most 600 in zoos. They originated from Mongolia but they no longer live there, instead they are spread across Asia and the Middle East. But 60% of the population is in China. They are found in the moutains at altitudes as high as 17,000 feet.
The reasons why they prefer to live in the moutains is because they camoflauge well due to their white and black spotted coats. They are able to spring to their prey from 50 feet away and 30 feet into the air. Unlike other large species of cats, they are unable to roar.
Their habitat is being threatened due to Global Warming. Their habitat starts where the snow line meets the tree line on the mountains. Since global warming is making the snow melt, the snow leopards have to move farther up the mountains where food is scarce.
The coat of the snow leopard is in high demand in the Black Market. Poachers illegally hunt these animals for their coats to turn them into clothes. The bones and other body parts of the snow leopard is also used for Asian medicine. As the cities grow near their habitats, the more conflict grows between the snow leopards and the humans.
