Darfur Genocide
Who: The Sudanese government is supporting the Janjaweed, an Arab militia, in the extermination of Black villagers native to Darfur.
How: The Sudanese government and Janjaweed have used rape, displacement, organized starvation, threats against aid workers, scorched earth tactics, air attacks, bombings, and mass murder as part of the genocide.
February 2003- present
Why: In February 2003, two Darfurain rebel groups rebelled against the Sudanese government, due to neglect and poverty. In response, the Sudanese government supported the Janjaweed in the genocide of Darfurians.
International Response: Although the Sudanese government denies any connection to the Janjaweed, the United Nations has imposed sanctions and embargos on the government in hopes of ending violence. Unsuccessful, the UN and African Union have sent military personnel to Darfur. Also, organizations and aid workers continue to provide necessities to refugees in dire need.
Genocide: the systematic killing of a group based on ethnicity, culture, religion, political views, etc.
