Darfur Genocide
By Tom Seibert, Molly Rowe, Lauren Wyatt, Thor Maan de Kok, and Elizabeth Clark
What Is Genocide? By defention, igenocide is the deliberate and systematic destruction of a racial, political, or cultural group., but what does this mean? The United Nations defined genocide as: In the Present Convention, it was stated that any of teh following acts can be categorized as genocide (a) Killing members of a group (b) Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group (c) Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part (d) Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group (e) Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group
How Does Genocide Affect people's lives? •People forced to leave their homes and lives • Forcved to live in crowded relocation camps which are crowded •Disease spreads like wild fire and many women who go out for fire wood and other items, are raped •Inadequate medical care and people starve. •The govornment is making it difficult for aid to reach these places.
Who? The Sudanese government and the Janjaweed (supported by the Sudanese government) are committing the genocide. Black villagers and other innocent humans in Darfur are the victims of the genocide. Why? •The govornment funded the Janjaweed to stop civilian uprising •Continued to fund after rebels were taken care of •How? The United Nations did not offically reconize this as genocide •Finally when they did, they offered little support
The UN reacted to late to the genocide. The reason being they declared it genocide after many people already died. The rebels prevented also trying to give support to the Darfurians. The UN also helped many people escape to Chad. Much more could be done but many rebels are preventing their support. Tens of millions of dollars have been used to support the refugees in Chad. Many of the refugees near the border of Darfur have been relocated to a safer region
