Kiwi
Diet
The Kiwi is a flightless bird endemic to New Zealand. There are 5 recognised species of Kiwi: the Great Spotted Kiwi, the Little Spotted Kiwi, the Okarito Brown Kiwi, the Southern Brown Kiwi and the North Island Brown Kiwi. All of these species are endangered.
The word 'Kiwi' orginated from the Maori language which generally means 'of imitative origin.' Linguistics believe that the name was given to the flightless bird due to it's keee-weee sounding cry.
Kiwis are very versatile eaters. They are omnivore consumers which mean they eat both animals and plants. Kiwi will dig for earthworms and grubs and will search for beetles, cicada, crickets, flies, weta, spiders, caterpillars, slugs and snails on the ground. They also feed on seeds and berries.
Kiwis are land animals. They are mainly found in native bushes which contain many insects and grubs. They live in nests under the ground known as burrows which can contain over 50 chambers. Kiwi will usually live in a different burrow each day as they scout many areas for food. Kiwi will sometimes live near beaches as they enjoy eating the insects that live on or in the sand.
