Kiwi
Reason for Becoming Endangered
After the British arrived they introduced quite a few mammals. The main predators for Kiwi were dogs, cats and Mustelids (ferrets, stoats and weasels). These mammals can kill Kiwi easily as they are fast and have good sight as well as smell. Kiwi weren't adapted to these types of predators because the Kiwi is quite slow and cannot fly its easy food for predators. 95% of baby Kiwi's will not survive the first 6 months of their life. This is due to all the new predators. This is the main reason why Kiwi birds have become endangered.
Kiwi thrived before the British arrived. Kiwi had little predators and plentiful of forest filled with food. However once the British arrived deforestation rates increased. Because there was less forest Kiwi had less adequate land to live in. Thus their numbers decreased. This has been a contributing factor to the endangerment of Kiwi’s.
Kiwi numbers have been rising recently. Conservationists have begun missions to save the Kiwi birds. Many conservation areas have been introduced to try to save the Kiwi bird from becoming extinct. There are many sanctuaries for Kiwi birds such as Whangarei Kiwi Sanctuary, Okarito Kiwi Sanctuary and Tiritiri Matangi.
