1- It is the mechanism that generates the infinite number of sentences that we produce and receive.
2-It is a tangible system, and can provide one element of a systematic approach to teaching a language.
3-It develops students`cognitive awareness of the language. Language is rule-based, and conscious or sub-conscious knowledge of the rules is the key to `generalizability` and creativity.
4-It conforms to students`expectations of language learning, and meets an often-heard request for `more grammar`.
5- It will be of assistance to teachers in the planning of their lessons.
Reasons to explain the prominence of grammar in books by M. John and Liz Soars.
It is necessary for students to have a moment in the lesson to go back and concentrate on form. Nowadays, most books allow them to focus on meaning first by reading a text, listening to a passage or watching a scene in a movie. Then, they are moved to the grammar focus in which they analyse the structures in detail.
Focusing on grammar also helps analytic learners who process information in a linear way. They also like rules and enjoy traditional classes. Therefore, learning grammar gives them an impression of a traditional way of learning.
3- Learners need the language rules as a tool to express what they want to say.
1- It is one of this mechanisms. Vocabulary is also extremely important to convey meaning because even though form is necessary to form sentences, the lexis provides the real meaning.
4- People who have learnt English before want to study and practise a lot of grammar to finally understand the rules. They believe that knowing the grammar points is everything they have to do. Teachers should make it clear that practising speaking, using vocabulary and many other things are also necessary when learning English.
2- It is definitely one more element in the new multi-syllabi, where other language systems, skills and strategies are taken into account.
5-It really helps teachers when selecting material, planning, testing and teaching. However, it should not be the main focus of the lesson. Learners need to be aware of its functions to know the meaning they are conveying.
