Frederick Douglass
the narrative shows how the evils of slavery affected the slaves and their masters. slavery kept the slave oppressed an discourage for hundreds of years. without and education there wasn't much that they could do once they were free , so many became sharecroppers. the whites also suffered from the evils of slavery. they became drunken with the power that they held over the naive and tortured slaves. the constituion states that all men a created equal, and if that is the case then no man should be able to enslave another man because, that creates an inequality. children are taught from a young age that things are not equal. frederick douglass expirenced this first hand.. he gave food to poor white boys in exchange to learn a few words, but knowledge came with a price. douglass realized the evils of slavery and the horrors it had brought upon his people. this made him very sad inside, he said he often wished he had never learned to read.
''I did not, when a slave, understand the deep meaning of those rude and apparently incoherent songs. I was myself within the circle; so that I neither saw nor heard as those without might see and hear.'' CHAPTER II
''but alas! this kind heart had but a short time to remain such. the fatal poison of irresponsible power was already in her hands, and soon commenced its infernal work." page 19 CHAPTER VI
