Apollo first established his oracle in Delphi when slaying a large Python. The Python belonged to Earth Mother Gaia. Before Apollo arrived, she was the owner of the oracle. It is said that Earth Mother Gaia gave the oracle to Zeus' second wife and was then passed Tianess Phoebe. Tianess Phoebe passed it down to her grandson Apollo for his birthday. It is not sure which story is true, but either way Apollo obtained the oracle.
The Pythia was believed to have been the speaker for a specific god and spoke the words of the god'. She was chosen by the Delphic community under strict requirements. Two main requirements were that she had to be over the age of fifty and had to abstain from any sexual intercourse. For each of 9 months of the year she gave fortunes on 1 day. When Pythia gave fortunes, her customer had to be purify themselves in the Castalian Spring. Most of the time, customers would bring gifts to Apollo to thank him for his englightenment and fortune through Pythia.
