How the country was created? Mesopotamia was conquered and occupied by British troops during World War I. After the war the European powers created the state of Iraq (the Arabic name for Mesopotamia) as a British mandate.
Important Leaders: Faisal, king of Iraq in 1921 he dies in 1933 & his son Ghazi takes over. King Ghazi dies in car wreck, his son Faisal the 2nd becomes king. Faisal is killed & General Abdul Karim Kassem becomes Iraq's leader, and begins reversing the monarchy's pro-western policies Colonel Aref becomes president when he is killed. his brother, Abdul Rahman Aref, takes over the presidency Al-Bakr resigns; his vice-president, Saddam Hussein, succeeds him
CURRENT EVENT: War in Iraq against United States has continued since March of 2003. They have faced health problems, but since Sudan Hussien was killed they have gradually been working on it.
