A picture of all of generals during the March to the Sea ranging from Sherman to Kilpatrick
The battle of Fort Fisher was important for at the time Willmington North Carolina was the last port avaliable for the Confederates to use, so when it fell the Confederates were out of supplies, forcing the war end will quickly at Bentonville North Carolina.
The Battle of Atlanta was important, for the Union army had to capture it in order to cut off there rail lines, and with the victory Lincoln got reelected.
Sherman's campaign March to the Sea, was an campaign done to push the Confederates out of the South, andthen to go up throuhg South Carolina to Richmond, Virginia, but exactly two weeks before Sherman can come up from the South U.S. Grant forced Lee to surrender, and then Sherman took the south completly out with the battle of Bentonville ending the Confedarate States of America. Through this campaign they retook Charlestown South Carolina,Fort Fisher, Savannah and Atlanta

During shermans campaign he was stretching his resource lines, so created foragers to go out in the wilderness and bring back food. while it is a good idea the soldiers ended up burning the towns. this was done in spite of hatred for the southern, and because of this he is regarded as a savage in the south, and his name is used as a curse. when he would occupied a house he made sure that the house was always left intack when the left. while the foraging was a good idea, you can not always trust your men to do the right thing. All throughthe south the burned the states to ash, but when he got to North Carolina Sherman said,' Easy boys this is an pro union state.' this is why most of our towns have really old trees. Sherman is originally from Ohio. he was messy, unclean, and overall a real lazy recruit. he loved the south that was his second home. after he was in hte Seminoles War he was then made a superintendent of a millatary school. when louissiana succeded he said he would show the south Total War, and that was what he did.
the battle of Bentonville was the last and final battle of the civil war along with the end to Sherman's campaign which ended the war.
The battle of Savanah inflicted significant damage, particularly to industry and infrastructure (per the doctrine of total war), and also to civilian property.
