Keystone Species: THE MOUNTAIN LION (Puma Concolor)
Mountain Lions Keep their environment in line mostly by preying on animals such as Deer, Porcupines, Raccoons and Coyotes. The reason this is important is because without Mountain Lions, Deer and other animals they prey on would become over-populated and food would become limited.

Mountain Lions Are more common in the Northern Yellowstone Ecosystem. This does not mean they are limited to this ecosystemfor they are present inside and outside of park bondaries
Species Protection
The Puma Concolor (Mountain Lion) Has become an endangered Species in some states. Because of this fact, there are laws prohibiting the hunting of Mountain Lions as game or for any other reason [not including life or death predicaments]. Due to the fact that a lot of mountain lions reside in the Yellowstone Region, many are protected in that way.
Fast Facts Height: 2-2.3 feet at shoulders. Length: 3.5-5.5 feet (2-2.5-foot tail length). Weight: 110-180 lbs for males; females weigh slightly less. Lifespan: About 12 years in the wild up to 25 years in captivity.
