Who is trying to sell what to whom? This is a so called mp3 player, which is a portable source to music. It's called iPod and is produced by the global brand Apple. The picture above is a typical iPod commercial from a magazine. I think Apple is aiming on pretty much everyone with this. However, I think the potential buyers originally were the ones in to fashion etc. Today you can spot a 60 year old with an iPod without thinking much more about it. This is because iPod are now so global and at least for me, the icon for all mp3 players. How does the ad try to catch our attention? There's almost no text at all. The Ipods advertisement lay-out is plain to the bone, spiced up by fancy colours. Every iPod advertisement has a main colour on the background, red, green, blue, yellow etc. Then there's a person, entirely black representing the owner of an iPod holding it up for us to see. There's only one tiny little piece of text there and it says; “It's a whole new world” As I said already, the entire advertisement is a picture of a colourful background, a black shade with human shape, representing the owner. And there's of course the iPod in his hand. Everything in the picture is sort of “plain”. By plain I mean that there's no colours mixed or anything. There's three colours in total. The blue background, the black man and the white iPod. At least that's catching to me. There's not much text. It says “iPod” in the bottom right corner and there's a headline, or slogan rather, saying “It's a whole new world”. I'm not sure but it seem to me that they're talking about technology here. This “new world” must be the new technology. The advertisement I'm analysing at the moment is not a commercial but the video I posted is. I think it's the music and the lyrics that is the main message of this commercial. Other than that it's just like any other iPod advertisement. As plain, but yet fancy as it can possibly be. Again, my main advertisement is the one from the magazine, hence why I can't answer this question. As for the youtube-linked commercial, the music is techno. It might just be me, but I think it's a trick Apple's using to give us the impression that this is the newest technology. No, there's no storyline attached to the advertisement or commercial. Well if it is, I don't get it. It doesn't directly try to persuade us into buying it. The commercial is more on the passive side trying to appeal to peoples feelings instead.
The advertisement contain no factual information, nor does it praise the product. What it does is to create an impression that iPod is something new, something that include you and make you one of the “cool guys”. The advertisement gives no logical reason to why we should buy this product. All it does it to present the iPod as the best choice available and make it attractive by promoting its design. “Does the advertisement make use of techniques like: - (false) experts? No they don't. - humour? Mo they don't. - branding? Well Apple is a brand. I don't know if that count though. But if you mean other brands, then no. - exaggerations? No, not really. To be honest, I don't think they need to. Everyone knows what an iPod is. What the advertisement do is to temp people into buy one, not showing people that it exist. - Personal appeal? Yes, yes, yes. That's what it does, and that's the only thing it does, and the only thing it need. - Brand new/state of the art? Well I'm sure Apple would like to think so, but realisticly there's other products deserving the state of the art title more. At least in my opinion. How would you comment on the use of language? Consider use of: technical terms: Well. It's a advertisement from a magazine so, again I'll just say that it's not very technical. The commercial however, contain techno music and fancy dancing. If you mean technical terms, as in information about the product then, no, not really. Slang: There's no use of slang. Slogans: There's one slogan used. “It's a whole new world” Puns: Nothing. Connotations: Well, in order to get the “It's a whole new world” you need to know the meaning of it. You need to understand that they refer to the new technology and that Apple want to take monopoly on it. How would you evaluate the advertisement? I think it's a great advertisement and it really caugh my eye. It's simple, fancy, genious and really modern. There's no use for anything else. iPod is known already so all it had to do was to sort of "remind" people that they exist. And this advertisement does that, and it does it really good. I would buy one if it wasn't for the fact that I got 2 already.
