Definition: A lateral (side-to-side) curvature of the spine that most occurs throughout the childhood or adolescence stage.
Risk Factors -Uneven shoulders/waist -Can develop back pain -Affect body image -Lung and heart damage
Diagnoses -Cause: unknown (genetics) -3 types: congenital, idiopathic, & neuromuscular -Discovered through x-rays
What is scoliosis ? -Curvature in the spine - 3 out of 100 people are diagnosed -Anyone can be diagnosed -Can cause discomfort -Cannot carry heavy objects
Treatment -Full physcial examination & an x-ray -Observe the spine (curve is about 20-35 degrees) -Brace the spine (curve is about 30-45 degrees) -Surgery when curve is over 45 degrees (spinal fusion)
