The international community did not become involved. Iraq’s neighbors, Turkey and Syria, did not intervene. Other countries were not suspicious. They knew that the Iraqi – Iranian war was taking place, which beautifully covered up the genocide. This was not considered a genocide until the ICC in Hague looked over it in 2005. This is because prior to the hearing, Kurdish people were not recognized as an ethnicity before by the genocide convention.
The international community can learn many lessons from past traumatic experiences of genocide. Genocide prevention should become part of domestic laws and national constitutions as well as of relevant international conventions and pacts.
