The Growth of Wellington
In 1865 the capitol of New Zealand was moved to Wellington. This is because of its central location in the country.
Because the capitol was moved, there was an increase in immigration to Wellington as a result of the expansion of government jobs. In 1867 the population was about 7,000, and in 1900 it was 49,000.
1839: European Settlers Arrive
Growth of transport connected Wellington to its suburbs and hinterland.
Wellington has become a cultural center.
