The Mayans
Houses: Their houses were made of fragile organic materials such as adobe. The house consisted of one rectangular room with rounded corners, no windows, and one central door built to face east. Did their homes travel? They were NOT NOMADS so their homes didn't travel. How did their enviorment effect them? It advanced their homes by giving them adobe and trees to build their homes. It effected their food by allowing them to plant crops.
Cities and Temples: Mayan cities were spread out and their temples were large pyramids. What was the role of Mayan women? They house keeped and cooked. What was the role of Mayan children? We couldn't find the role of the children, but we do know that their role was the same as ours, to be the people of the future!
Physical Features and Climate: The Mayans lived in a tropical climate and their area had many trees, but some barren areas. What arts and crafts did they produce? They made jewelry, beautiful calanders, hyroglyphics, and pyramids. What type of recreation did they enjoy? They enjoyed a game called pok-ol-pok. It was a ball game that was both a sport and a sacred ceremony. The object of the game is to hit a ball through a hoop. The losing team lost their jewelry and sometimes their lives.
How did they get here? Many people are not sure, but scientists say that they came from the West. They believe that Itzamna, their Sun God, led them there. What was their religion and some beliefs? Their religion was Mayan. They believed in gods like the Sun God. How did they communicate? Did they have a writen language? They communicated by a language of their native tongue. They did have a writen language.
Foods: The Mayas ate many different foods. Some of them are corn, liquid corn, barbecued iguana, armidillo, tapir, monkey, manatee, fish and seafood, chocolate, chocolate drinks, tortillas, tamales, and honey. Fun Fact: They used cacao beans as money!!! Who did they trade with and what did they trade? They traded with indians that lived in the Bahamas and in Panama. They traded things like crops and furs. Who controled the tribe and how was it organized? A king lead them. Their tribe was organized like an empire. One of their leaders was K'inich Janaab' Pakal. He was their most famous leader.

Maya the Mayan's Diary (Notepad): Dear Diary, Our tribe is one of the most advanced tribes in the Western Hemisphere! I'm so proud of us! Do we make sacrifices? We perform human sacrifices! Before a king took office, there is a sacrifice. Since other sacrifices were for our favorite gods, this made the king less of an ordinary human. It is thought that wars were created to provide sacrifices to people such as our king or gods.
