Trojan War
In Troy, Odysseus has to go away and fight after his son, Telemachus, was born. He went to go fight in the Trojan War. This war was started by Paris (son of the king of Troy) because he took Helen (wife of a Mycenean king) to Troy. They couldn't get into the city of Troy so then Odysseus had an idea. His idea was to build a huge, hollow wooden horse. First, they would abandon their ships making it seem like the Trojans had won the war. The Trojans would think the wooden horse was a symbol that Myceneans had surrendered. They brought the horse into the city, partied, then when everyone fell asleep they would get out of the horse and attack the Trojans. The Myceneans ended up winning the war after this couragous and clever attack on the Trojans. Through this war Odysseus solidified his character traits of as a leader who is strong, courageous, and noble.
The theme of the Trojan War is about life or death. Like how Odysseus decided to go to war rather than spending time with his new son. He risked his life when he didn't even really have a chance to know his son yet. I wouldn't be able to go to war because I don't want to die young especially without knowing my son. I wouldnt be able to live with that burden.
"The great tactician" - This term creates the image of Odysseus as being intelligent, and probably comes his being the initiator of the idea for the "Trojan horse."
