The mahogany coffin represents defeat, a struggle overcome. It was built shortly after Doodle's birth because it was thought that he would surely die soon after. However he did not die so the coffin was put away in the barn. He has overcome it once but later he was defeated.
The Scarlet Ibis
The burning cotton field represents success and defeat. Past this field is where he learned to walk and also where he fell down dead.
The ''burning'' orange sun represents Doodle's last days. He was with his borther on this day and on the day he died.
The scarlet ibis represents Doodle's life and death. The ibis lived and died with Doodle.
The bleeding tree represents blood of birth and blood of death. The tree was mentioned at Doodle's birth and before his death when he was covered with blood. Doodle is weak and red like blood but he grew in size and strength like the tree until his death.
