THE TITANIC !
April 14th, 1912
- There were 16 lifeboats on the ship - 1,178 people were carried on these lifeboats - 472 lifeboat seats were not used - Only 28 people were carried on the first lifeboat, when 64 could have fit - 32 lifeboats were required to hold everybody
- This is the day that the Titanic hit the Iceburg. It was 4 days into the trip. - It was around 11:40 pm when the ship hit - The Atlantic was about 30 degrees at the time of sinking - The impact only lasted about 10 seconds at most - The iceburg left about 300 feet of damage along the Titanic
- 5 out of the sixteen compartments got flooded - Eventually the ship split into two - The stern rose out of the water, almost perfectly vertical, and broke between the 3rd and 4th funnels.
LIFEBOATS
UNSINKABLE ?!
The titanic was thought to be unsinkable because the hull was split into 16 different watertight compartments all connected with heavy doors. The boat was able to remain afloat even in 4 of these compartments got flooded !
