3 Elements of Setting from the novel Their Eyes were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston
The element of time is very important. It gives the reader a sense of what people though and felt. Each time frame comes with a certain stereo type. The early 1900's is the time frame for this novel.
The element of geography is also very important. Where a story is located can affect characters daily lives and opinions. In the novel west Florida, Eatonville, and the Everlades are visited.
The elemnet of atmosphere is possibly most important to a reader and the characters development in the book. The mood and atmosphere of a story can cause the characters to develop differently and create emotions and connections. In the novel many moods are shown. Love being primary. But the atmosphere of the story is very fast, strong, and questionable. Gossip, God, and an air of serenity control the novel.
They sat in company with the others in other shanties, their eyes straining against crude walls and their souls asking if He meant to measure their puny might against his. They seemed to be staring at the dark, but their eyes were watching God. pg 151 Talking about the hurricane coming which is a normal in Florida.
It was hard to love a woman that always made you feel so wishful. pg 111 The people of Eatonville are talking about Janie Crawford the main character showing an atmosphere of gossip.
Why she don't stay in her class? pg 6 This quote shows that in the early 1900's discrimination was very much present. Not only against african americans but against women and those who had more money than others. The setting of mood and atmosphere is extremely important to the novel. It gives the reader a sense of what the characters are feeling. The mood of the story can show a reader how the characters are affected and why they do certain things they do. A story cannot be a story without mood and atmosphere.
Time is very important to a novel. It gives you an idea of the clothing, techology, and major events that a character has experienced. This can change how a reader perceives feelings, words, and simple gestures.
