I was born 1313, Paris, France, and died Dec. 21, 1375, Certaldo, Tuscany. I began writing when I was young, but my father wanted me to forget writing and learn business. I was a banker, then studied religious law, and then held several diplomatic and government positions. None of these were very satisfying to me. Between these jobs, I continued to write poetry. Even though my father did not want me to write, I became a poet, storyteller, and scholar. I also helped set new directions for Italian literature and for the study of classical Greek and Latin texts.
The story takes place in the italian countryside of Florence. It is a good area for farming. In the 1300s a visitor would not see much. The locals lived in hand-made houses. The town of Florence was largely populated. It is a city with industry and craft, commerce and culture, art and science. The climate is temperate with breezy winters and hot summers. The town itself looks like it's stuck in Renaissance Period, the city is a living museum. It has some of the biggest churches in Italy, and is home to many famous statues and fountains. It used to be the capital of Italy until 1870. The city is famous for its literary works. For example, Pinnochio orginated from Florence. The main religion of Florence is Roman Catholic. Florence is located in the very center of Italy, so it is a landlocked city. Appearances matter. You can almost always determine the social class of a person by the way they dress. Greetings are more enthusiastic. Meaning, they greet one another more fondly than we do in the United States. Kisses on the cheek are most common. When giving gifts in Italy, you must be very careful on what you decide to give for the italians critize everything. Puncuality is not a big deal in Italy. Florence overall, has many scenic views and quaint shops to offer. It is a great place to visit.
