Timeline 1809 - Edgar Allan Poe is born on Jan. 19, 1809 in Boston, Massachusetts. 1811 - Poe's mother dies, leaving him an orphan. He is taken in by the Allan family, but is never formally adopted. 1826 - Poe attends the University of Virginia, but his gambling debts cause his guardian, John Allan, to call Poe home. 1827 - Poverty forces Poe to join the US Army, where he enlist under the name of Edgar Perry. 1831 - The death of Poe's foster mother, Frances Allan, creates sympathy from John Allan. Allan helps Poe obtain a release from the Army and secure a place in the US military academy, West Point. Poe quickly drops out of West Point to pursue his dream of writing. 1833 - Edgar Allan Poe wins $50 from Baltimore weekly for his short story, The Manuscript Found in a Bottle. 1834 - Edgar Allan Poe's guardian, John Allan, passes away. He leaves Poe nothing in his will. 1835 - While working as editor at the Southern Literary Messenger in Richmond, Virginia, Edgar Allan Poe marries his 13 year old cousin, Virginia Clemm. 1839 - The first volume of Edgar Allan Poe short stories, Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque, is published. Poe also writes the now famous thriller, The Fall of the House of Usher. 1841 - Edgar Allan Poe writes the short story, The Murders in the Rue Morgue. The story is now considered the birth of the modern detective story. 1845 - Edgar Allan Poe writers the poem, The Raven, which becomes an instant success. Nevertheless, he is paid poorly for the work and continues to suffer from financial problems. The poem is now considered one of the best written and best known poems in the English language. 1847 - Edgar Allan Poe's wife, Virginia, passes away. Poe falls into a deeper depression than usual, drinking heavily. 1849 - Edgar Allan Poe is found semi-conscious in Baltimore. He never regains enough strength to explain his condition and dies on Oct. 7, 1849.
