The Land of the Dead
The Land of the dead is located at the end of the earth, on the far western shore of the earth-encircling river Okeanos, beyond the gates of the sun, and the land of dreams. It is bordered by the Akherousian lake and three named rivers--the Styx, Kokytos and Pyriphlegethon. A judge named Minos receives the dead from Hermes Psykhogogos (Leader of the Souls), and sentences the most wicked to eternal torment.
"Who would willingly roam across a salty waste so vast, so endless?" Homer, The Odyssey This quote represents Odysseus as an epic hero because is describes him as having the strength to get home after the help he recieves during his journey through the land of the dead.
"about your return home.... I do not think that you will escape the eye of Neptune," (this is an example of forshadowing)
An example of an epithet is "Ulysses noble son of Laertes"
"He asked me to his house, feasted me, and then butchered me most miserably as though I were a fat beast in a slaughter house, while all around me my comrades were slain like sheep or pigs for the wedding breakfast, or picnic, or gorgeous banquet of some great nobleman. " This is an example of an epic simile.
"There were tall trees, moreover, that shed their fruit over his head- pears, pomegranates, apples, sweet figs and juicy olives, " This is an example of setting.
"Neptune, who still nurses his bitter grudge against you for having blinded his son" (this is an example of indirect characterization because it may seem like he has a hard time forgiving people.)
"About his breast there was a wondrous golden belt adorned in the most marvellous fashion with bears, wild boars, and lions with gleaming eyes;" This quote describes Hercules' belt symbolizing the battles and death he had experienced.
