Intro: Postmodernism is difficult to define, because to define it would violate the postmodernist's premise that no definite terms, boundaries, or absolute truths exist. It is the movement away from the modern style of writing and towards a new style more focused towards rights of individualism. Postmodernism works express the idea that no class of people should have dominance over another. Some issues brought forth during this period include the difference between man and woman and Caucasians and African Americans. Writers during this period stretched the importance of self thought, and went against the common belief saying society could progress as a whole without the need of technology, such as the making of weapons of mass destruction.

Events Leading to Post-Modernism- The beginning of postmodernism, a post-WWII genre of literature, is often marked by events such as the Cold War and the civil rights movement. The civil rights movement, along with the feminist movement of the time period, brought about new prominent themes in literature. These events influenced the thinking of people, and led them to reject the typical ideals of the prior era. Themes such as racism and women’s rights became prominent in many literary works, caused by such events as those mentioned.
