SLAVES Many Africans in the South were slaves. These slaves often worked as maids, nannies, or worked on the farm usually cotton picking. Slaves were treated better in the south than in the North. For example, some slaves were given one room cabins with dirt floors to live in. But if the slaves were distrespectful, or tried to escape then most of the times they were wiped.
Though many African Americans in the south were slaves, many lived in houses with their families and had good lives and jobs.

AFRICAN AMERICANS IN THE SOUTH During the week, african american (slaves) in the south either worked in the house or out in the field. (75% worked in the field) Many slaves picked cotton. Some times during the week slaves would escape, but not all attemps succeeded, and even if they did many slaves lived in swamps and then a week later they would return, or slaves were caught on the street by "slave catchers" and often the slave catchers mistook freed slaves for escaped slaves. Slaves weren't supposed to practice religion but many masters allowed it so their slaves would behave better. This also allowed african americans to learn a new religion, Christianity. They practiced religion all through out the week. The slaves master's also tried to keep slaves together, but all to often they were split up.
