We must've fallen asleep sometime during the night, because I woke up Next to Salem in the bed I made on my floor. Luckily we were both dressed. Well, except for the fact that Salem had no shirt on. Jade was still sound asleep at sunrise. I left Salem, still sleeping on the floor, to go watch the sun come up. In an instant all that had happened last night came back to me. Salem had kissed me on the porch for what seemed like forever. He had lifted me into his arms and took me to the bed I'd made. For a while longer we kissed. for some reason I'd removed his shirt from his body. I'd never felt so in love before. "Good morning Erika." Salem said smiling at me. He leaned against the doorway to my porch. Oh, he looked so beautiful. The sunlight glistened off his bare chest. His dark brown eyes faded to a shade of carmel brown. My heart skipped a beat. I finally urged a smile after looking him over a few times. "Good morning to you too." I turned back to the still rising sun. "I wanna talk to you." He said walking up beside me. "About what?" "It's about Jade." He started. "I want to raise her to be a fighter." For a moment I was speechless. What does he mean by "raise her"? I thought. "You mean raise her like, you and I?" I asked. "Yes. I want us to raise her." He smiled again. "You have a motherly feel about you that she needs. She needs a mother like you. Kind, caring, loving, friendly, and a fighter." "That means we protect her at all costs." I said in a serious tone. "If one of us goes down, we make sure she's safe first." "Of course." He said. Once again he looked straight into my eyes. I saw the passion he had last night rise up again. "About last night..." "Salem... Listen. I dont know how last night happened but it happened." I blurted quickly cutting him off. "I was going to say I forgot to tell you something last night." He laughed. "You jump to conclusions too much." "Well thanks. I feel so much better now." I was sure my sarcasm got across very clearly. "Wait..." Salem's eyes ventured off towards the forest. "Someone's coming. Stay with Jade." He whispered sternly as he pulled me into the room. I hurried over to Jade, who was still asleep. How can one child sleep so much? I thought. I had spoken too soon. "Who's there?" She said opening her tired eyes. I now noticed they were a soft shade of green. They were like emeralds sparkling in the sunlight. It's no wonder her name was jade. "Shhh...." I whispered. "Don't say anything." she nodded in silent reply. I held her close to me and turned my head to the porch door to hear Salem and a strange woman's voice talking. "You've got to get rid of that girl, Salem." I heard her say. "She's very skilled. Skilled enough to ruin us." "I dont care. I left the resistance long ago." Salem argued. "Now leave. This is my home and I can have you arrested for trespassing." "What is it about her that made you leave?" The girl asked furious. I could hear the anger in her voice. Salem was silent for a moment. "She's powerful, skilled, fearless, non-judgemental..." He paused. "and she's beautiful. When she fights, it's like watching a ballet. She's like a little piece of heaven. I love her." Silence filled the air. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Salem loved me... "Well then. I see where your loyalties lie now." She said through clenched teeth. Jealousy filled her tone of voice. I now feared for Salem. I've seen the jealousy of a woman kill a man. I had to see what was happening. I hid Jade under the blankets carefully and snuck to the door with my swords in my hands. I swung the door open with the fierceness of a lioness. The woman stared at me with eyes full of fury and jealousy. Her jet black hair was to her shoulder and her eyes were a blackish red. She reminded me of a demon, eyes like daggers and a heart of stone. "Who are you and what are you doing here?!" I demaded. Salem backed away from the woman to my side. "My name is Naghita. I was sent here to find and kill you. But look! You've come to me." She lunged at me with the force of a man. Soon I was in a fight with a powerful warrior, intent on my death. Her claw like nails left bleeding scratches on my face. She was fast but I was faster. With every swing of her sword I moved out of the way in the nick of time. I landed a few kicks to her side and a jab to the stomache, but she was quick to recover. I had no choice. She lunged at me again, but this time I had a dagger in my hand. With one quick thrust, the dagger was in her abdomen. I managed to stab her in a spot where she wouldnt die instantly. I managed a few answers out of her, like the location of the rebel base, thier plans, and who sent her, before her eys shut forever. I retrieved my dagger and cleaned it. Salem took Naghita's body outside and buried her while I calmed Jade. She had secretly watched the whole fight. She saw me kill Naghita. "Why did you kill her?!" She yelled at me. "Would you rather have me or Salem dead?" I said sternly. I tried not to yell at her. I'd never yell at a child, especially one that's already gone through so much. She stayed silent for a while before returning to sleep again. I had some time to myself to take in what had just happened, finally. It took Salem a while to come back. He told me he took her body back to the borders of the rebel camp and left it there, sneaking away undetected. We stood in silence for a while on the porch. The morning had just begun to come to life. Birds were chirpping and fluttering all around. I could hear the waterfall flowing not far away. Salem silently stood next to me and took my hand. I felt the electricity I had felt the night he kissed me. It shot through me like I was struck by lightning,, without the pain. "I heard what you said about me Salem..." I said after a long silence. "I know. I made sure you did." He turned to me still holding my hand. His free hand came up to my face and cupped it softly. "I'm in love with you Erika. I promise you, I'll find a way to protect both you and Jade, whatever it takes." "You have no idea how happy it makes me to hear you say that." I smiled and wrapped my arms aound his neck. "Can I kiss you then?" He chuckled. "Yes you can" and with that our lips met gently but overflowing with passion.
