Here, as you can see, I am 'other'. I have experienced for a short time what is it like to be in the minority. It was relatively easy for me to accept that I did not belong. There was no possibility of blending in.: Physically, not of asian descent, taller and wider than other asian women.. There was a great language barrier. I felt frustrated at times that I could not communicate the way I would like. We stayed amongst ourselves and rarely had opportunity to communicate with the locals. When we did meet and talk (in either broken English or terrible Japanese), everyone was polite and welcoming. Part of the lyrics of the song playing now says: 'There is a mother who is laden with who she has to be'. Her identity is ascribed over her by others (Austin & Hickey, 2007a).. I experienced an identity ascribed over me on my visit to Japan. I was treated politely, but an outsider; I was 'gyjen' to them, that is, NOT Japanese. These aspects of identity that were ascribed over me, I also assumed. I acknowledge what I am not and affirm who I am to be valid also. I have no reason to believe that my identity is not valid. I am white and have lived in invisible privilege my entire life.

Just to let everybody know, this piece is solely for an assignment exploring my identity according to race and ethnicity. It is in no way meant to be offensive and I have no problem with other cultures. :) thanks
