Penelope
After a while the suitors became anxious and told her that she must move on. Penelope devised a plan to make a shrowd for Laretes., and she would choose a suitor when it was finished. She avoided this by every night by candle light ripping out the stitches. This charade lasted three years until a untrustworthy servant told the suitors, and they burnt the tapestry and loom. '''Sweethearts, Ulysses is indeed dead, still, do not press me to marry again immediately; wait- for I would not have my skill in needlework perish unrecorded- till I have finished making a pall for the hero Laertes, to be ready against the time when death shall take him. He is very rich, and the women of the place will talk if he is laid out without a pall.' This was what I said, and they assented; whereon I used to keep working at my great web all day long, but at night I would unpick the stitches again by torch light. I fooled them in this way for three years ''
Penelope waited for twentiy years piosly and chastly while men were camping at her house drawn by her beauty, wealth and power. Since it was Greek custom to enterain and be hospitible, Penelope and the entire household endured her unwelcome guests
Exposision
Climax
Odysseeus is shown as an epic hero because he kept his composure when he was talking to his wife about all the problems the suitors had caused to distress Penelope. He also avoidedd speaking about anything perrsonal to him so not to give away his identity like in this quote''Then Ulysses answered, "madam, wife of Ulysses, since you persist in asking me about my family, I will answer, no matter what it costs me: people must expect to be pained when they have been exiles as long as I have, and suffered as much among as many peoples.''.
This episode happens at Ithica during the 3-4 years before Odysseus' return
Setting
Indirect Characterization is shown in this chapter with Penelope's actions. She is shown as clever when She devises the Plan to trick the Suitors. She is hospitable because she houses all of the suitors and providesfood, though she does it reluctantly. Penelope is cunning because she presents her plan to avoid marriage to the suitors in a very convincing way. She is shrewd because she uses the tradition and the honors of the shrowd to her advantge in the scheme. She is also sly because se never tells the Suitors outwright that she will not remary .Like she told Odysseus in disguise ''I have to invent stratagems in order to deceive them''. She always eludes to the fact that she will after something happens. For example, one was when Penelope promised the suitors that she would choose a husband after she made Larates's shrowd so he will die with honor which he deserved. She is also a bit desparate because everyone is pressuing her to get rid of the suitors by marrying one and she feels hopless as she describes in this quote '' This was what I said, and they assented; whereon I used to keep working at my great web all day long, but at night I would unpick the stitches again by torch light. I fooled them in this way for three years without their finding it out, but as time wore on and I was now in my fourth year, in the waning of moons, and many days had been accomplished, those good-for-nothing hussies my maids betrayed me to the suitors, who broke in upon me and caught me; they were very angry with me, so I was forced to finish my work whether I would or no. And now I do not see how I can find any further shift for getting out of this marriage.''.
Characterization
The Aftermath
The quote ''morning aproched as the Young Dawn reached out her rosy finger tips'' is an epic simile comparing the early morning's pink sky to the godess Dawn's rosy fingertips
The titles ''Celestial Maid'' and ''Mathchless Queen'' are epithets concerning Penelope.
