Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome is very real. Many veterans did not speak about the war adding to the mysitcal nature of what happened in the war. It came from the fear of being bombed and horrors of trench warfare. Many of the men were not born soldiers, so they were not mentally prepared. Many of the soldiers came back with a startling unenchantment with life that was notorious in that Feel Good Era. Many who were affected were notorious for their "thousand-yard stare" or dazing off. Other symptoms included flash backs, night terrors, depression, and paranoia that led to fits of shaking. In WWI it was considered a psychiatric disease, but since many were affected by the horrors of trench warfare, it was considered common to the culture.
Not all looked like this, but they were effected just the same...
