When did it pass? The text of the 26th Amendment was passed on March 23, 1971 that stated the voting age to be eighteen in both state and national elections. In just 100 days, on July 1, 1971, the amendment was ratified.
What changes did the amendment create immediately after its passage? No changes had been made.
Why was it proposed? During this time, the United States was involved in the Vietnam War. Males over the age of 18 were being drafted into the armed services. The people of our country were somewhat disturbed that these young men were allowed, even forced, to fight and die for their country, but they were unable to vote. The 14th Amendment only guaranteed the vote, in a roundabout way, to those over twenty-one.
What is the amendment about? All United Citizens over the age of eighteen have the right to vote.
What were some arguments for and against it? Arguments for the amendment were that if men over the age of eighteen were eligible to fight in a war then they should be eligible to vote for the country they were risking their lives for. Arguments against it were that the states should be the ones to decide the age of voters for state and local elections. Some states were so avidly set against ratifying the amendment that they took the case to court. The case was called Oregon V. Mitchell.
The 27th Amendment
How does the amendment continue to affect the country today? It is a very important privilege for citizens over 18 to be given the right to vote. This gives them the opportunity to help change the country for the better the sooner they can.
