Growth & Change
It's a good thing you have skin wrapped around you. It covers your bones and muscles, keeps your insides from spilling out. It also keeps out water, dirt and germs!
Your skin is made up of billions of tiny cells. When cells grow old, they die and fall off your body. Thousands fall off every minute. After you take a bath and dry yourself, a fine powder rubs off your skin.
Under the top layer of skin is anothere layer called the dermis. When you are out in the sun , Vitamin D is absorbed in this layer of your skin. However if you get a bad sunburn or any kind of burn it can damage the cells in the dermis and leave you with a scar.
Skin colour comes from a pigment in the dermis called melanin. Melanin protects the skin from the damageing rays of the sun. The more melanin you have the darker your skin is and the longer you can stay in the sun without harm.
