Parkinson's Disease
Parkinson's disease is also known as PD.
Symptoms: Some symptoms of Parkinson's include depression, shaking or tremors, difficulty swallowing, speaking, diffculty urinating, skin problems, slowness in movement, and sleep disruptions.
Causes: Parkinson's disease is caused by the progressive impairment or deterioration of neurons (nerve cells) in an area of the brain known as the substantia nigra.
Treatment: Currently there is no cure for PD, but there are a number of medications that can provide relief from symptoms for victims. Surgery may be appropriate if the disease does not respond to the medication.
Prognosis: PD is both chronic, and progressive. Some victims may become severely disabled, while others may experience only minor discomforts.
